Historical Research Breakthroughs for Fanconi Anemia patients at Fairview-University Blood and Marrow Transplant Services:

1968    First HLA matched sibling donor BMT in the world

1976    First FA BMT (sibling donor)

1987    First FA BMT (unrelated donor)

1990    First Umbilical cord blood HCT for leukemia

1992    First FA patient with AML cured by unrelated donor BMT

1997    Series of phase I trials improving survival from 19% to 42%

2000    World’s first cord blood transplant performed on an FA patient using pre-implantation genetic testing to ensure a perfect tissue match

2001    FA BMT patient has healthy baby

2002    Survival in standard risk patients after unrelated donor BMT increases to 78%
