Historical Research Breakthroughs for Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant at Fairview-University Blood and Marrow Transplant Program

1968    First HLA matched sibling donor BMT in the world

1992    First unrelated donor transplant at the University of Minnesota

1994    First unrelated umbilical cord blood transplant

1994    UCB transplant program established at University of Minnesota

2000    Midwest's first public umbilical cord blood bank established

2000    World's first umbilical cord blood transplant performed using pre-implantation genetic testing to ensure a perfect tissue match

2000    First double-cord blood transplant

2003    Successful and routine engraftment of cord blood grafts for adults using 2, closely matched cord blood units

2004    Initial publication of experience with alternative donor, reduced intensity cord blood grafts for adult recipients who are too advanced in age or whose condition does not allow conventional allogeneic transplantation
