Patient Care Unit

Wildlife murals and framed quilts and artwork help our 32-bed BMT unit appeal to patients' and familys' comfort.

Pediatric and adult patients are treated on separate units - 4A and 4B, respectively. Each unit has a nutrition center where families can store food and are free to use the refrigerator, microwave oven, coffeemaker, ice tea maker, blender, breadmaker and toaster. They can also treat themselves to the gourmet coffee beans and bread mixes available in the center.

Knowing how challenging a hospital stay can be for patients and their families, we have several enhancements for the comfort of our patients and their families. On our units, you'll find a blanket warmer, radio/CD players and TV/VCRs in patient rooms and plenty of videotapes and CDs.

Through Project IsoLink, a program funded by Children's Cancer Research Fund, computers with networked Internet access are also available to patient rooms, leaving phone lines open for patients and families.   Our Internet access allows patients to communicate with their friends and family members, keep up on school work, and have access to the outside world. Pediatric patients' rooms are also equipped with Playstation II game players and recliners.

Other Facilities
A patient-friendly lounge is located on the BMT unit for family members to use to rest, watch TV or read. Shower and bathroom facilities are located nearby on BMT Unit 4B; a laundry area is located one floor away in the Children's Center, Unit 5B.

The hospital's cafeteria is located on the eighth floor. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends. The cafeteria serves a wide assortment of meals, from grilled items, to sandwiches to salads and desserts. Vending machines are located near the restrooms on the third and fourth floors of the hospital. There are also several local restaurants within walking distance.

Fairview-University Medical Center, located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota, ranks among the nation's most respected teaching hospitals in every area of medicine and is among U.S. News and World Report's top teaching hospitals in the U.S.
